Best
of luck to Marshall Bennett
It is with sadness that we note the news from State Treasurer
Marshall Bennett that he will not seek a fifth term in that
position. Mr. Bennett has made the decision to join the
New York law firm of Wolf Popper, LLP, and we at the DBJ
wish him well. Marshall Bennett was a fair-minded and non-partisan
elected official who truly seemed to have the best interests
of Mississippi at heart. He says that he will continue to
be involved in securities matters for the state in his new
position, helping to stop fraud and deceit in the marketplace,
and we have no doubt that he indeed will. DBJ
Supporting
education means doing your homework
We at the DBJ support the enthusiastic support currently
being given for our state’s schools. However, we also
believe that education must not be politicized as it too
often is by both parties. More attention should be paid
to teaching methods, teacher qualification and competency
and school safety than how much tax money is being poured
into the system. Such spending begs the question: what are
we spending ON? We must look more carefully at and monitor
more closely curricula, quality and method, i.e., the means
of education so that we may have a better ends. DBJ
Don’t
let agenda-driven media make up your mind
We are somewhat dismayed by the success of the liberal media
in systematically undermining President Bush’s foreign
policy. We want to ask our readers to think for themselves
when they watch opinion-selling masquerading as news coverage.
If we do not allow President Bush to deal from strength
with the international community, we are doomed to be tools
of terrorists forever.
It is hard for Americans to understand, but most other countries
respect nothing but strength and power. We are often criticized
for “letting” terrible things happen, but when
we try to prevent them, we catch it from our own media.
If Saddam Hussein has the opportunity, he will aid terrorists
with weapons of mass destruction. It is a clear and present
danger. Don’t wait until it happens to support your
President. DBJ
