The Delta Regional Minority Business Association recently hosted their
first Annual Awards Banquet and Reception to honor several minority businesses. The
Greenville event coincided with Minority Enterprise Development Week which is an annual
event celebrated nationally and locally to recognize the contributions of America's
minority entrepreneurs and those individuals and organizations who actively support
minority business development. This year marks the first time that activities have been
organized in the Delta in celebration of MED week.
The theme for the awards banquet, "Creating a Competitive Advantage in a Changing
Business Environment," signified the mission, goals and objectives of the newly
formed Delta Regional Minority Business Association.
Guest Speaker for the evening was Clara Reed, RN and CEO of Mid-Delta Home Health, Inc.
Reed, a successful Delta entrepreneur, has grown Mid-Delta Home Health into one of the
largest minority-owned firms in the nation with 18 offices in 22 Mississippi counties with
750 employees. Corporate headquarters are in Belzoni.
"The opportunity to showcase minority entrepreneurs in the Delta area is greatly
needed," says Larry Williams, Technical Advisor. "The awards banquet by all
accounts was a huge success with over 200 people in attendance."
Reed spoke of her climb to success at the event urging others to do the same.
Awards were given to several Delta businesses including Townes Construction Company of
Grenada, Indywood of Indianola, Courtesy Cleaning Company of Tunica, Buck's Restaurant of
Greenville, Compusystems of Greenville, Mississippi Valley State University's Center for
Economic Development, Delta Bus Lines of Clarksdale, and Delta Foundation of Greenville.
"Minority business development has to become a primary focus of economic development
in the Delta area if we are all going to improve our quality of life for all of the
citizens in the Delta," says Williams. "We also would like to thank the
Lighthouse Point Casino for all of their efforts in making this event possible."
