Trends in Check Cashing Outlets

Some consumers call them legal loan sharks. Others
refer to their services as payday loans. But leaders
in the check cashing industry say they provide a
valuable service without banker's hours.

"A lot of people think of check cashing companies as
legal loan sharks, but we provide a service for people
who can't get money anywhere else," said Teresa
Casburn of Speedee Cash in Cleveland. "For instance,
we just had a big rush for back to school supplies and
clothes."

Crops Crisis

Delta farmers will be lucky to break even during
harvest time, said Dr. O.A. Cleveland, marketing
specialist for the Mississippi State University
extension service.

"We started the year in excellent fashion with early
anticipation of outstanding yields," said Cleveland.
"The August crop report showed conditions with
expected five-year average yields, or, in other words,
a very respectable crop. Since then, we've been void
of any moisture or rainfall and that has taken its
toll."
