Delta Legislators Fare Well in Committee Representation
Capps again Appropriations Head; House & Senate juvenile justice chairs from Delta

  New century, new administration, new committees.  On Jan. 4, Ronnie Musgrove (D-Batesville) was elected as Mississippi's new governor by an 86-36 House vote. Days later, House Speaker Tim Ford (D-Tupelo), passed out committee assignments that named Delta representatives as chairmen of five committees, including Appropriations and Juvenile Justice; four vice chairs are Deltans.
  The following week, Lt. Governor Amy Tuck (D-Maben) assigned six state senators from the Delta as head of committees ranging from Juvenile Justice and Public Health and vice chairmen of three committees, including the Education Committee.
Listed below are state senators and representatives from the Delta, and their committee assignments.

SENATORS:
  Attorney Barbara Blackmon (D-Canton) is chair of the State Library Committee, vice chair of the Insurance Committee and serves on Constitution, Finance, Highways & Transportation, Judiciary and Public Health Committees.
  Attorney Neely Carlton (D-Greenville) is the newly appointed chair of the Interstate & Federal Cooperation Committee, vice chair of the Judiciary Committee, and serves on Agriculture, Appropriations, Environmental Protection, Fees & Salaries, Public Health and Universities & Colleges Committees.
  Newcomer Robert Chamberlin (R-Hernando) is vice chair of the Universities & Colleges Committee and is a member of the Appropriations, County Affairs, Economic Development, Judiciary, Municipalities and Wildlife & Fisheries Committees.
  The following three state senators were formerly members of the House of Representatives: Mike Chaney (R-Vicksburg) is vice chair of the Education Committee and serves on the Agriculture, Appropriations, Environmental Protection, Insurance, Oil & Gas, Ports & Marine Res. and Investigate State Offices Committees. Delma Furniss (D-Rena Lara) is chair of the Veterans & Military Affairs Committee and a member of the Corrections, Economic Development, Fees & Salaries, Finance, Highways & Transportation, Judiciary Committees and the Executive Contingent Fund. Robert "Bunky" Huggins (R-Greenwood), congressman since 1972, heads the Public Health & Welfare Committee and serves on the Appropriations, Corrections, Fees & Salaries, Oil & Gas, Public Utilities and Wildlife & Fisheries Committees.
  David Jordan (D-Greenwood) is chair of the Municipalities Committee and works on the Agriculture, Business & Financial Institutions, Education, Finance, Forestry and Labor Committees.
  Willie Simmons (D-Cleveland) is vice chair of the Corrections Committee and is a member of the Economic Development, Finance, Juvenile Justice, Public Health & Welfare, Public Property and Investigate State Offices Committees.
  Attorney Johnnie Walls (D-Greenville) chairs the Juvenile Justice Committee, is vice chair of the Fees & Salaries Committee and serves on the Appropriations, Elections, Judiciary, Rules, Universities & Colleges Committees and the Executive Contingent Fund.

REPRESENTATIVES:
  Attorney, former judge and Isola native Willie L. Bailey (D-Greenville), serves on all new committees this term: Conservation, Ethics, Juvenile Justice and Ways & Means.
  Attorney Edward Blackmon, Jr. (D-Canton), who represents Yazoo and Madison counties, is chair of the important Judiciary B committee and is a member of Apportionment & Elections, Education, Rules, and Ways & Means committees.
  Realtor Tom Cameron (R-Greenville), whose district includes Issaquena, Sharkey and Washington counties, is vice chair of the Labor Committee and serves on the same committees as last time: Conservation, Public Health, Transportation and Ways & Means.
  A lawmaker since 1972, farmer and insurance businessman Charlie Capps, Jr. (D-Cleveland), is once again chairman of the powerful Appropriations Committee, and serves on the Constitution, Enrolled Bills, Executive Contingent Fund, Legislative Budget and Military Affairs Committees.
  Attorney Linda F. Coleman (D-Mound Bayou), who represents Bolivar County, is vice chair of the Penitentiary Committee and serves on the Appropriations, Fees & Salaries, Judiciary A and Municipalities Committees.
  As newly appointed chairman of the Juvenile Justice Committee, former youth court counselor George Flaggs, Jr. (D-Warren) also serves on the Appropriations, Management, Public Health, Investigate State Offices and Legislative Budget Committees.
  Funeral director and insurance agent Clayton P. Henderson (D-Tunica), who represents Coahoma, Panola, Quitman and Tunica Counties, is again chairman of the Enrolled Bills Committee and serves on the Agriculture, Appropriations and Public Buildings Committees.
  Construction supervisor Robert E. Huddleston (D-Sumner), whose district covers Quitman, Sunflower, Tallahatchie and Leflore Counties, will serve on the Agriculture, Oil & Gas, Penitentiary and Public Ground & Lands Committees.
  Businesswoman Wanda T. Jennings (R-Southaven) serves on the Judiciary A, Juvenile Justice, Municipalities and Oil & Gas Committees.
  Economic developer and realtor Leonard Morris (D-Batesville) is vice chair of the Ways & Means Committee and is a member of the Constitution, Education, Fees & Salaries and Municipalities Committees.
  Attorney Willie J. Perkins, Sr. (D-Greenwood), who represents Carroll, Grenada and Leflore Counties, stepped up from committee member to vice chair of the Management Committee. He also serves on the Banks & Banking, Judiciary A, and Ways & Means Committees.
  Land developer Valeria Robertson (R-Olive Branch), will work on the Constitution, County Affairs, Labor and Public Health Committees.
  Retired educator Sara R. Thomas (D-Indianola) represents Sunflower County on the Conservation, Education, Juvenile Justice and State Library Committees.
  Contractor, brick mason and court investigator Jimmy Thornton (D-Greenville), who represents Bolivar and Washington Counties, serves on the Apportionment & Elections, Investigate State Offices, Oil & Gas, Penitentiary and Transportation Committees.
  For another term, Tommy L. Woods (R-Byhalia), is chair of the Interstate Cooperation Committee, and serves on the County Affairs, Public Utilities, Transportation and Ways & Means Committees.
  Delta newcomers to the House of Representatives include Jep Barbour (R-Yazoo City), Robert Clark (D-Lexington), Chuck Espy (D-Clarksdale), Chester Masterson (R-Vicksburg), John Mayo (D-Clarksdale) and May Whittingham (D-Schlater).
