Dear Delta Business Journal:

The Honorable George W. Bush, President of the United States, is committed to the values of President Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. President Bush is serious about removing any barriers that impede the success of any American. Our great nation is competing in the global economy, and we must strive to always exceed standards. The Honorable George Bush has addressed inequities in our education system with his ãLeave No Child Behindä program. The following Web link demonstrates our President understands our students are the economic soldiers of tomorrow:

There rest of the world is not relaxing any standards, and they are investing in their prosperity via quality education. In the United States we pride ourselves on the local control of the schools. Therefore, I urge you all to contribute whatever time you have available to make sure our children are always focused on doing their best. I have traveled to several other nations in this world, and believe me, they understand the jobs go to the countries with the most qualified workers. Therefore, they emphasize excellence, and we must do the same. That means we must resolve the problems that result in a lack of representation of minorities in universities, career fields, and even political office.

Lowering standards in the United States does not reduce the desire of the rest of the world to obtain economic dominance. Thus, the band-aid policies of the past that in no way were meant to actually deal with inadequate school facilities, overcrowded classrooms, insufficient professional preparatory classes, and anemic teacher salaries, are no longer practical nor acceptable.

Sincerely, Tyrone D. Scott
