Fair
Tax is the way to go says reader
I would like to personally thank you for (Scott Coopwood’s
column on)the Fair Tax idea. The one and, in my opinion,
most important aspect of this idea was not mentioned though.
The trillion dollar under ground economy that pays no taxes
at all now would, under the fair tax plan, finally pay taxes.
Every crime for profit, ie, drug dealing, robbery, etc.
would now be taxed under the Fair Tax plan. I believe it
is about time the drug dealers pay taxes.
Again I thank you for your coverage.

“Right
on” for Fair Tax!
You’re all over it! The Fair Tax is the answer to
our prayers. In addition to the benefits you stated in your
article, the Fair Tax will eliminate more than $200 billion/year
of income tax compliance cost--the filing, calculating,
litigating, etc. that we do every day just to determine
what income tax we owe. This absurd expenditure doesn’t
feed, clothe, shelter, heal, protect or even entertain a
single living soul--a total dead weight upon our society.
This effort requires 6 billion person-hours each year. That’s
the equivalent of 3 million people working full time to
accomplish nothing useful for society. Can you imagine the
good that could come from turning that effort toward something
we need?
Right on! Everyone contact your Congressman, Senators and
President right now and say, “I want the Fair Tax.”
Check out all the details at www.fairtax.org. This is the
most researched tax bill in the history of the world. The
work has already been done.

Service
still exists at regular hours
Let me start by saying I enjoy reading the DBJ every month
and look forward to the next issue. I would however, like
to take a moment of your time and correct a slight error
or possible oversight you made (in Jack Criss’ November
column). I do agree with you on the issue of competitiveness
and in order to accommodate the hometown people one must
maintain regular business hours that are customer friendly.
The merchants in the Mississippi Delta, not only in Cleveland
but the surrounding municipalities, such as Clarksdale,
work very hard to bring the customers a decent, well stocked
place to do business locally. A place where you can go and
the people inside still know your name, your birthday, your
likes and dislikes. They even know your dogs name if the
case may present itself. They work hard to compete against
the mass merchandisers of the world that are taking a few
independents out of business every year because of cheaper
prices due to the bulk quantities they are able to purchase.
You stated that there needed to be independents “that
kept regular dependable business hours and stayed open a
bit late to accommodate folks with tight schedules.”
Ones that, in “order to compete with Wal-Mart, the
Internet, Jackson and Memphis, their doors are going to
have to be open when they are supposed to be.” You’re
right! “It’s that simple,” and there is
at least one store in the Mississippi Delta that does just
that.
You may or may not be aware of a store located in Clarksdale.
This store is open 7 days a week from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM
Monday thru Saturday and 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Sundays to
accommodate anyone who may have a schedule that is a little
“tight” to work around. This store will even
stay later in the evening if you happen to be running late
and call them to let them know you’re coming. That
is right! This hometown store will wait on you to get there
before they close. Even the “Big Guys” won’t
due that. They were even open Thanksgiving Day, when Wal-Mart
was closed, for those who wanted to get out and shop to
beat the rush and avoid the crowds the day after Thanksgiving.
The name of this store that is 100% customer oriented is
R.L. Aarons Dry Goods Company and we are located on Hwy.
61 right across the street from Wendy’s.
The next time you get frustrated with not being able to
do business with a local merchant....come see us! We’ll
be here when you need us to be and if your running late,
just call. We’ll wait on you to get there and still
greet you with a smile.

Enjoyed
story on Lipscomb
Great cover story on my good friend and fellow soldier,
Jim Lipscomb (in your December DBJ). He is, indeed, a patriot
and a great leader. I enjoyed serving with the General,
and I highly value our continued friendship. Always enjoy
your DBJ. Keep up the good work.
