Capture of Hussein a decisive event?
Being awakened on the Sunday morning of December 14 with the news of Saddam Hussein’s capture was good news indeed. The failure to have captured him had been seen as an Achilles’ Heel of the U.S. war effort by many commentators; that we now have him in custody is cause for careful celebration. For while we have one less dictator on the planet, others remain, as do terrorists—most notably, Bin Laden. We must never forget that the reason we went to war in Iraq was not primarily to overthrow Hussein and liberate Iraq; it was primarily to strike a major blow in the battle against terrorists and what was instigated against the U.S. on September 11, 2001. We got Saddam. This is positive news. We must now move forward and hunt down the others before they strike again.DBJ

Job Creation Summit a success
The Delta Business Journal’s sense of excitement over the incoming Gubernatorial Administration grew even stronger after Governor-Elect Barbour held his Job Creation Summit this month. With keynote speeches by White House Chief of Staff Andy Card and FedEx Chairman Fred Smith, as well as a full house of over 300 top business leaders in the state, Mr. Barbour demonstrated his well-celebrated ability to attract the top names in business and government. Perhaps, though, what was most encouraging were the sessions where top Mississippians in business, education, and government discussed four fundamental issues important to our economic development—workforce training and education, enhancing our legal climate, maximizing the role of higher education in economic development, and utilizing our state’s natural resources and existing assets. We, along with other attendees, were impressed with the focus and content that this summit demonstrated, and believe it portends good things for Mississippi and the Delta. DBJ
