Mississippi
Valley State University leaders take school to next level
“Valley
of Scholars” is the fastest growing university in
the state in enrollment
HIERARCHY
GETS THE JOB DONE: From
left to right, Dr. Roy Hudson, Andre' Curry, Tonja Johnson,
Dr. Lester C. Newman, F. Perna Carter, Dr. Cassie Osborne,
Lonza Hardy and Dr. Moses Newsome are all prepared to make
Mississippi Valley State University an even greater asset
to the Delta.
What
started as a vocational school “Up From a Cotton Patch”
(the title given to founding president’s James Herbert
White’s history of the school) in 1950 is now one
of the most well-respected, fastest growing universities
in the Southeast. Mississippi Valley State University has,
in the relatively short time since its creation, become
known as “The Valley of Scholars.” This phrase,
coined by current school president, Dr. Lester C. Newman,
is an apt one and succinctly encapsulates how the University
has evolved.

MDA director sets goal
Strategic
alliances are top priority
Special
to the DBJ
Steve Hale, the new executive director
of the Mississippi Development Agency,
says building partnerships will be a top
priority in the months ahead. Hale was
appointed to head MDA after the resignation
of Bob Rohrlack in early June. “During
my last year as the MDA’s chief
of staff, I have worked hard to build
alliances among various public and private
groups, and have supported economic development
at the local level. I know how important
it is to build these partnerships.”

HALE
TO THE NEW CHIEF: Steve
Hale has replaced Bob Rohrlack at
MDA. |
|
Hale
characterizes the change in leadership at
the agency as a smooth transition, a view
shared by Governor Ronnie Musgrove. In a
news release at the time of Hale’s
appointment, Musgrove stated, “We
have had a strong management team in place,
and that will not change. Steve Hale is
a known commodity to this state’s
economic development community, and I am
confident in his abilities to continue our
success.” A former mayor of Senatobia,
Hale had previously worked as senior policy
advisor to Governor Musgrove, focusing on
economic development. “My experience
in economic development comes from the local
level,” Hale states. “That’s
where everything starts.”
