Mrs.
Odealier J. Morgan is the first African American and hourly
employee at Delta State University to have a building dedicated
in her honor. The University unveiled the new sign declaring
“Odeiler J. Morgan Laundry” recently during
a special ceremony on campus. Morgan retired in the spring
of 2003 after spending 47 years as a member of the laundry
staff.
Dr. John M. Hilpert, President of Delta State presided over
the ceremony.
“Mrs. Morgan is an inspiration,” said Hilpert.
“Today is a special day for her, the University, and
the State of Mississippi. Her spirit pervades this university,
it is an example of the best in all of us and we are truly
grateful, Mrs. Morgan, for the 47 years you’ve spent
here. We hope you have at least another 47 years of wonderful
living ahead of you.”
“Thanks to everybody,” Morgan told the crowd
of well-wishers. “You just don’t know how good
I feel. I wish I had the words.” She added, “The
best thing in the world is to do your best everyday. If
you can help somebody along the way then God will be with
you.” Co-workers say Morgan’s faith in God was
her only priority above her job.
Nealy Robinson, Manager of Laundry Services at Delta State
said he has come to know Morgan as a compassionate, caring,
hardworking, Christian woman. “Delta State University
is very fortunate to have had such a loyal staff member.
Her leadership, work habits, moral standards, and love for
Delta State University have set goals for other staff members.”
Many of Morgan’s family members attended, traveling
from as far as Texas. Morgan’s nephew, Wavon Morgan
spoke on his aunt’s behalf. “DSU, we are elated
and overjoyed his that you so kindly give honor to whom
honor is due. One of the greatest gifts an individual can
receive is to be called a servant. 47 years at DSU I believe
that can be called a servant.”
While on staff at Delta State Morgan was named Employee
of the Month by Staff Council in March 2001. She has also
been featured in several campus publications. Morgan was
named staff emeritus of laundry services upon retirement.
Emeritus status is approved by University Administration
and is awarded as a way to recognize dedicated DSU employees.
