Congratulations
to Governor-elect Barbour, new officials
We
at the DBJ wish to extend congratulations to Governor-elect
Haley Barbour on his successful campaign and subsequent
election. This year’s governors race—and most
all of the other statewide races—were hard fought
contests among some outstanding and qualified candidates.
As with a democracy, however, the people have spoken and
several new leaders have emerged. We look forward to working
closely with Mr. Barbour, Lt. Governor Amy Tuck, Attorney
General Jim Hood, State Treasurer Tate Reeves, and all other
elected officials in making sure Mississippi—and the
Delta—fulfills all of its incredible potential. After
the political “honeymoon” is over, legislators
will get down to the business at hand. We urge them all,
newcomers or veteran, to stay focused on the important issues
that face us now. DBJ
Fast
food targeted again
They’re coming to take your Big Macs and extra crispy
chicken! The Center for Science in the Public Interest (whatever
that means) has taken it upon itself to decide what you
should or should not eat, and government regulators and
trial lawyers are paying close attention. A recent ad by
KFC, touting its chicken as part of a healthier diet, got
the Center and the Federal Trade Commission in such a tither
that KFC has pulled the spot. We at the DBJ wonder what’s
worse: a three-piece chicken dinner or the feds pressuring
and threatening the free speech of business. The executive
director of the Center of Science in the Public Interest,
a Michael Jacobson, was quoted recently as saying he hopes
the FTC would “force” KFC to run corrective
advertising, at their own expense, of course. Both entities
should butt out and let the real “public” decide
what they want to eat and whether it fits their own individual
dietary needs. DBJ
