Double
standard for Lott?
We find it interesting—and somewhat disquieting—that
Democrats are not bringing down one of their own in the
same way Republicans did to Trent Lott over his Strom Thurmond
remarks. Virginia Democratic Senator Jim Moran made comments
at an anti-war meeting recently saying that Jews are responsible
for the Bush’s administration drive for war against
Iraq. Moran quickly apologized, but then the issue was swept
under the rug. The lack of any major reprimand from those
in the Democratic Party is certainly a far cry from the
attacks launched at Lott from his own Party, President Bush
and the media. In our opinion, Moran should either resign
or make vocal and tangible amends for his comments, which
were degrading to both the President and the Jewish community,
including our friends and allies in Israel. But...not even
a slap on the hand. The double standard applied toward Republicans
and conservatives such as Senator Lott is appalling. Could
anyone imagine what hell would break loose if, say, Bill
Frist or Thad Cochran made a statement such as Moran did?

Goodbye
to French fries
Freedom fires or French fries? The burning question remains.
In light of the idiotic and irrational stance France has
taken against our war efforts in Iraq, a backlash has begun.
French wine is being given away, French’s mustard
is waging a PR campaign according to The Washington Times
and now the ever-popular French fried potato may be a thing
of the past. We at the DBJ say: Would you like some Freedom
fries with that shake? In the traditional spirit of victory
sprouts, why not change the name? It’s a nice patriotic
show of solidarity and a small moral shot at those pesky
Gallic snobs who, by the way, owe their continued existence
to the United States of America. Ironically, Thomas Jefferson
supposedly invented the French fry during his tenure as
ambassador to France after the Revolutionary War. The Sage
of Monticello would no doubt approve of the name change,
especially now when the civilization he helped create is
under attack. DBJ
Only
big changes will save the United Nations
Most Americans believe that the United Nations is useful
in certain areas–most notably humanitarian assistance
and peacekeeping after conflicts are solved. However, the
recent debacle has proven what many of us have thought for
many years, and that is that the United Nations is totally
worthless in dealing with international security issues.
The Security Council itself is a joke, when terrorist nations
like Syria are allowed to sit on it. That is also true of
the Human Rights Council, which was due to be chaired by
Iraq until the recent conflict intervened. They also threw
the United States off the Council at one point, while Libya
and Iraq remained members.
When Security Council members like France and Russia are
allowed permanent status, thus giving them veto power over
any issue, and when they have proven that they care more
about politics than security, it is time for an overhaul.
We should get to that issue as soon as the war on terror
permits. DBJ
