Mike Retzer continues in tradition of
other Mississipian Republicans

Republican
candidates across Mississippi got a boost recently when
Mike Retzer of Greenville was elected Treasurer of the Republican
National Committee (RNC) for a four-year term. As Treasurer,
Retzer will oversee the receipts and expenditures of the
Republican Party.
Retzer currently serves as Mississippi’s national
committeeman on the Republican National Committee. He served
as chairman of the Mississippi Republican Party from 1978
through 1982 and again from 1996 until 2001. In 2000, he
was Southern Regional Coordinator for the George W. Bush
campaign in Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana and
Tennessee.
Mississippi Republican Party Chairman Jim Herring seconded
the nomination of Retzer for the post. “Mike Retzer
is a self-made businessman who has been a tireless advocate
for Republican causes,” says Herring. “Three
years ago, then Governor George W. Bush entrusted him with
the task of coordinating his campaign in five Southern states,
including Arkansas and Tennessee, the home states of President
Clinton and Vice President Gore. All five states were won
and the rest is history.
“Having a Mississippian in the leadership of the Republican
National Committee will pay dividends for Republican candidates
here in Mississippi. It ensures we have a seat at the table
when important decisions are made,” says Herring.
“I congratulate Mike on his successful election, and
I’m excited about all the good he can achieve as Treasurer
of the RNC.”
Retzer,
who won the post by acclamation, says it is an honor to
have been elected Treasurer of the RNC. “The Republican
National Committee represents nationally the kind of mainstream
values we believe here in Mississippi,” says Retzer.
“With an outstanding Republican president in the White
House and a lot of opportunity this year to elect Republicans
in the state, it’s a great time to be part of the
RNC leadership team.”
“The RNC is fortunate to have Mike serve as Treasurer
of the Republican National Committee,” says RNC Chairman
Marc Racicot. “Mike brings impressive business and
political credentials as well as a tremendous amount of
experience to our party. He has worked tirelessly on behalf
of President George W. Bush in Mississippi and across the
country. The national party is thrilled to have Mike as
a member of the RNC leadership team.”
Retzer is the third Mississippian to hold a leadership position
at the RNC. From 1992 until 1996, Yazoo City native Haley
Barbour served as Chairman of the RNC. Former Mississippi
Republican Party Chairman Evelyn McPhail served as Co-Chairman
during the same time. Under their leadership, Republicans
gained control of the Congress for the first time in 40
years. DBJ
